Ponneri is a town in north of Chennai in Thiruvallur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located in Ponneri taluk. The neighbourhood is served by the Ponneri railway station of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network.
Ponneri is most upcoming area of north Chennai. Ponneri would be developed as a smart city being developed by Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA). Japan preferred Ponneri as it was closer to the city and the Kattupali and Ennore port because most of the Japanese companies are located in and around north Chennai. Japan International Co-operation Agency is preparing the master plan for the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor.
“The development of Ponneri as a smart city will ensure equitable distribution of urban growth,” said Hidehiro Ishiura, director-general of the Japan External Trade Organisation.
The proposed Chennai Bangalore Industrial project would attract an Investment of $ 181 Billion of which $ 31 Billion ( around Rs 2 lakh Crores ) will come in Ponneri and generate 3.75 lakhs jobs over there . The development will also be supported by large scale investment by TN Government in improving the Road network and Connectivity, adequate Power supply and Water desalination plants.
